The good news was the Coyotes bounced back from back-to-back losses and rode one of their best home first periods of the season to a victory.

The bad news was that brain-dead penalties—delay of game, too many men on the ice—continued to surface. Meanwhile, the injury bug continues to hit the defense hard, and that's a spot where the Coyotes can't afford it.

Kurt Sauer has been out since the second game of the season with a head/neck injury that the Coyotes haven't elaborated on. Zbynek Michalek is out for at least several games with a lower body injury suffered in Wednesday's loss at Colorado. The Phoenix Coyotes have recalled defenseman Shaun Heshka from their San Antonio AHL affiliate and are sending forward Mikkel Boedker back to the minors. Both moves were announced by the team on Friday. Heshka had two goals and two assists in 13 games with San Antonio this season. He was acquired by Phoenix from Vancouver on June 27 for a seventh-round draft pick.

Peter Mueller had little trouble expressing his relief after scoring his first goal of the season. "Finally," Mueller said after the Coyotes' 3-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.
