Western Michigan's defense hasn't always played up to par this season. In fact, too many times it proved to be a liability.

But the group significantly picked up its play Nov. 14 against Eastern Michigan. The Broncos forced six turnovers to pave the way for a 35-14 victory.

So what took so long?

"I felt things pick up right from the beginning," Broncos safety Jamail Berry said. "We just came out with the emphasis (that) we need turnovers. Anything's possible from the D-line all the way back to the secondary. That's just what we tried to do."

Berry was the leader of the defensive resurgence, picking off two passes by Eagles quarterback Alex Gillett. Damond Smith intercepted a pass in the end zone.

The Broncos also recovered three fumbles.
