The promise of August and September has come down to one last game, one last chance to escape an 0-8 Southeastern Conference campaign, one last opportunity to avoid a 10-loss season.
Pride and a good ending are about all the Commodores have to play for Saturday night when they meet Tennessee in Knoxville. While the Volunteers try to become bowl-eligible, Vanderbilt can only close a forgettable year with a bang.
For coach Bobby Johnson, the latter option will do.
"If you can get a win against a team that has dominated the series between the two schools the last 30 years, you will feel a whole lot better about this season," he said.
