SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP)—B.J. Daniels dashed Syracuse’s hopes just when the Orange had momentum, and the South Florida defense took care of Greg Paulus.

Daniels hit Carlton Mitchell with an 85-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second half to break open a one-point game. Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul returned an interception 18 yards for another score, and the Bulls remained unbeaten, 34-20 over the mistake-prone Orange on Saturday in the Big East opener for both teams.

“I had to put some points on the board,” said Daniels, who a week ago led the Bulls to a stunning 17-7 win at Florida State in his first college start. “Carlton just came open deep, the corner was cheating inside, and I hit him long.”

Syracuse (2-3) had won two straight behind Paulus, who entered the game completing nearly 70 percent of his passes. But against one of the top defenses in the country the former Duke point guard faltered, throwing five interceptions as the Orange committed seven turnovers.

Paulus finished 25 for 46 for 269 yards, was sacked three times, and equaled the school mark for interceptions set by Todd Norley in a 28-7 loss at Penn State in 1982.

“I don’t think I’ve had five interceptions before,” said Paulus, a star quarterback in high school in Syracuse. “I’ve had eight, nine, 10 turnovers in basketball. You just can’t do that against a good opponent. You start to press a little bit. It’s all on me.”

Daniels’ strike to Mitchell gave South Florida a 21-13 lead, but Paulus guided the Orange right back down the field to the USF 21, converting on third-and-long situations three straight times. But the fourth third down of the drive led to another turnover when Pierre-Paul hit Paulus’ throwing arm as he released the ball and Kayvon Webster intercepted.

Daniels then guided USF on a 48-yard scoring drive capped by Mike Ford’s 5-yard run.

Pierre-Paul made his critical interception on the Orange’s next possession, laying back at the line of scrimmage on first down.

“I saw it and I grabbed it,” said Pierre-Paul, who scored untouched. “I was waiting and I was surprised.”

“I didn’t see him,” said Paulus, who had touchdown throws of 11 and 29 yards to Mike Williams. “They brought pressure. I thought I could throw it over the pressure. I probably should have thrown the ball away. We’ll learn from this. Sometimes, you have to have an experience like this to take a couple of steps forward.”

Since joining the Big East, the Bulls are 22-5 out of conference, with wins over Auburn, Florida State, Kansas, North Carolina and North Carolina State. In conference, they are only 15-14 and have never finished better than 4-3.

The lone exception has been Syracuse. South Florida is 5-0 against the Orange, having beaten them by a combined 174-53. But this one was by far the most difficult because, even though the Bulls scored four times off SU turnovers, they also lost three fumbles.

“We needed all of them for us to win that game,” South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt said. “You can’t imagine how difficult it was for him (Daniels) to come in here today, after the game he had last week with all the pressure, and face a group that defended him well. He kept his head about him and finished the game out, and that is pretty impressive.”

Ford also scored on a 26-yard run in the first quarter and Mitchell caught a 33-yard TD pass from Daniels in the second.

The first 5 minutes of the game featured five turnovers. Syracuse lost two fumbles and Paulus was intercepted deep in USF territory. Orange nose tackle Arthur Jones recovered fumbles by the Bulls on their first two plays from scrimmage. Daniels fumbled his first snap of the game and wideout Dontavia Bogan lost another fumble right after Nate Allen picked off a Paulus pass at the USF 17.

“It was like high school after the first five minutes,” said Daniels, who was 12 for 20 for 208 yards and gained 32 yards rushing. “I guess our focus wasn’t all the way there.”

The Bulls settled down after their shaky start. Mitchell had six catches for 139 yards, more than offsetting another stellar performance by his counterpart on the Orange. Williams had a career-high 13 catches for 186 yards for Syracuse.

You have bumped your head if you think that Miami is the best team in Florida....the gaytors have that distinction locked down, and have for awhile now.....

Just looked at Syracuse's schedule. Someone really wants them to help turnaround their pathetic football program. 7 of the first 8 games are in the rickety old confines of the HomerDome. Must be all the twits who got jobs at ESPN and the Berman brothers (perverts that they are).

The way Yahoo plugged this story, I thought he threw like 10 interceptions in the game. 5, on the other hand does happen. It ties a school record for a school that has an ordinary history. Yahoo, stop using hyperbole!

How do you even play football? I mean,I understand touchdowns and all that, but what are you supposed to do with the big yellow fork on either end of the field? I don't know. Maybe that's pro ball I'm thinking of,'cause I don't think they use those forks in college??

south florida is a good program slowly headed in the right direction, although there is alot of talent in the state of florida, i cant imagine that it could b very ez to recruit against flo and flo st or the best football team in florida - miami. Syracuse on the other hand what r u thinking, I dont follow cuse football very closely but what is wrong with the freshman Nassib, is he hurt or something, cause Paulus is a clown! He was a cry baby, coaches butt kissn lil vermin at duke n basketball was the sport he was supposedly good at. If Nassib is healthy n u jus dont wanna throw him to the wolves yet what is Dantley's problem he cant b worse than paulus. Ya know its too bad the cuse arent in the ACC cuz remember Oregan's Blount knocking out that mouthy punk from Boise St, how many ACC teams would love to do that to paulus, I know i wud

I like USF. They play smart, yet exciting football. I am wondering if this win will finally push them into the rankings...? I guess we'll find out soon enough. Good luck to the Bulls the remainder of the season.

I am a USF alum and I have to agree, they seem to fall apart in their conference games..but they get up for the big ones. they can beat FSU and Auburn... then turn around and lose to Pitt and Rutgers. However, the Big East is better than most think. Levitt does a great job preparing his team...but the coaching on the field at game time leaves a bit to be desired. Had Paulus only thrown 4 picks instead of 5, this came could have had a different outcome. I am rooting for my Bulls....but the bearcats in a couple of weeks will be the real test. If they can win that one at home, they are on their way!! Go Bulls!!!

Don't let some moron from my conference or the Big 12 talk about superiority. You have a fine program headed in the right direction.

    SouthFloridaBulls09,

I wouldn't worry about Scott W.....apparently he's so dense he doesn't even realize he's talking about the wrong school. Hell, they aren't even in the same conference.....UCF is in CUSA, USF is in the Big East....

My question is why are fans of the "Big Schools" doing on a posting about South Florida beating Syracuse anyway? Sorry we cant all be Texas, OU, UF, USC, Ohio St... we've only been around 13 years, why dont you stop worrying about USF. If we're so terrible, why are you wasting your time talking trash on us?

USF is over rated and will lose 2-3 times. They'll lose to Cincy, WV, and probably Rutgers. Not as good as you think. Keep dreaming and drinking.

Thats what Utah said they should be this they should be that they should have played for the championship now look at them. If not already they slipping out of the top 25 ranks fast. So USF won a few games they still not contenders for anything, they haven't faced LSU, Alabama, Florida, Texas, Penn State, they beat a couple of ranked teams that were on their way out fo the top 25

I believe steve S' final point was that Scott was showing ignorance for his comments. By referring to situations and teams as retarded and gay, you show no signs of intelligence to be commenting any matter. Scott was clearly posting for Texas, and in the case of UT vs. the State of Florida, its not even close. Florida will once again win the championship and Tebow and co. will go down as one of the greatest groups to play the game, and I don't even like Florida!

Steve S perhaps you should do some research before you speak out? over the past 30 years the Big 12 has 7 national champs, yes the SEC has 8 but srsly thats not much of a lead to brag about. If you wanna start draggin random teams not in the sec into the equation the dont discount usc, ohio state, and oooh yeah byu! Texas will win the National Championship at the Rose bowl this year, woulda won it last year if the BCS wasnt effin retarded. no way oklagayma shoulda been ahead of texas in the bcs when texas beat them on a neutral field by 10+ points.

a coach making a first year quarterback throw the ball 46 times in a game is crazy, yea he is a 5th year but he hasn't played football in 4 years. No basketball coach would let a 5th year football player take 25 or 30 shots. Stop blaming a guy that wasn't expected to do amazing things and start looking at this idiot coach

What sort of crack are you smoking Scott W? Florida football sucks??? Yeah that's why over the last 30 years Miami, Florida and Florida State have 10 national championships between them. Your precious Texas has one. The Big 12 is a joke. Miami beat OU today and you guys were owned by the SEC in bowls last year. Think before you speak, otherwise you just show your ignorance.

yea usf hasn't really beaten anybody, lets see if you still think they should be a top ten team after they lose their next 4 games: cincy, pitt, wvu, and rutgers then they got an easy week with louisville, followed by another loss at miami, and they may even have trouble with uconn. thet'll finish the season with 5 or 6 losses and be playing the St. Petersburg Bowl.

Why should the Bulls be a top 10 team? Their best victory comes over a pretty sketchy Florida St. team. Be reasonable. We all know that their other competition has been Wofford, Western Kentucky, Charleston Southern, and Syracuse. Real quality wins there.
